AltRider Side Stand Foot for Triumph Tiger 800

Kicking down your side stand shouldn’t make you worry about a falling or sinking bike. The AltRider Side Stand Foot for the Triumph Tiger 800 offers peace of mind by creating a larger footprint to support the weight of your bike on soft ground.

Made from hefty 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) thick stainless steel, the bottom plate will not bend,  loosen, or  begin rattling over time.It features a 3D tread that provides traction for your boots and is the most ergonomic design on the market, allowing easy deployment of the side stand while still on the bike. The AltRider foot attaches using the flanged top plate that holds the curved foot, and Torx fasteners clamp it down for a tight fit.  This is the only side stand foot on the market with a top plate that encloses the foot from every angle -- there’s no chance of losing this one.

    Not good enough

Unfortunately, after discussing the issue with AltRider support, it seems the issue is not one at all in the opinion of AltRider. The product I received is working as designed, and as such I feel the product deserves no more than two stars. It does not do the job right. The upper plate bends when you screw it down until it becomes tight enough. If you stop when it starts bending, the lower plate is not secured to the foot correctly. AltRider support say the upper plate is supposed to bend, which is okay but should be mentioned in the instructions in my opinion. However, the amount the plate was bent once I had it as secure as I wanted it, was worrying. I have a basic amount of knowledge in materials science, enough to know that for a thin metal plate to bend that much is not going to last a very long time once you add in the dynamic load of setting the bike down on it a couple of times per day. The real issue comes into play when you look at the lengths of the screws that are included, or perhaps the lack of spacers/washers. The screw at the back of the foot which is designed to take two washers between the plates and one beneath the screw head needs at least three (!) more underneath the screw to ensure the screw is flush against the bottom of the foot. Why this is important should be obvious: if the screw is past flush with the bottom, it will break off eventually, but probably actually quite quickly. I added washers to all screws, some to simply make the screws flush and others to add some distance between the bottom and top plate, which was bending down a worrying amount at the front of the foot. After laying all this out to AltRider support, I did not receive another reply. I had initially been offered a return, but only for 80% of purchase price because the product had been installed. Well, how am I supposed to know it doesn't fit right before I install it? I thought AltRider takes pride in well-engineered products and stands behind them. Your marketing certainly seems to suggest you put a great deal of thought and expertise into every single one of them. Well, I'm sorry to say this one was simply a failure.
